EM Multiplayer EDH Tourney: Pod 1, 24 Nov Game Report

Just got back from EM for the weekly EDH tourney. Decided to play (for once!) since EM was outta ZEN packs and no draft was running. Draft comes first, always!

8 players registered this week, and I was paired up with the following guys and their respective generals:

Nik with Rofellos,
Justin with Niv Mizzet,
Aidi with Vendilion Clique,
and yours truly with Sharuum.

Nik won the dice roll and the game progressed in the order above. Apologies guys for any error in my notes!

Turn 1
Nik: Forest, Lotus Petal, Rofellos. Everybody says WTF.
Justin: Land, Sol Ring, Sensei’s Divining Top
Aidi: Island
Reza: Jwar Isle Refuge, up 1 to 41

Turn 2
Nik: Forest, Harrow, Scryb Ranger, returns forest, untaps Rofellos, Aspect of the Mongoose enchanting Rofellos. Again, cries of WTF all around.
Justin: Land, Mana Vault, Tops
Aidi: Island
Reza: River of Tears

At this juncture, Aidi and I are feeling incredibly disadvantaged, as 2 players from each pod advance to the finals. The sheer amount of permanents by the other 2 players was overwhelming. The writing was on the wall for both of us…

Turn 3
Nik: Terra Stomper
Justin: Land, Jace, selfish draw. At the end of turn, Aidi V. Cliques himself, condemning Traumatic Visions and drawing a card.
Aidi: Land
Reza: Polluted Delta

Turn 4
Nik: Smacks me with the Stomper + Ranger, I go down to 32. Plays Silklash Spider. Nik’s reason for attacking me: I had the highest life thanks to Jwar Isle whilst everybody was still at 40 life LOL. Whispersilk Cloak.
Justin: Land. Draws with Jace. Tops again somewhere along the way.
Aidi: Land. Plays a morph. EOT, I crack the Delta for Tundra, going down to 31. Wizardcycles for Venser.
Reza: Plains. I had tutors in my hand: a Vampiric and Demonic Tutor, but I was starting to run low on life. I needed to find a solution quick!

Turn 5
Nik: Strip Mine. Smacks Aidi for 9 with the Stomper & Ranger.
Justin: Land, Vensers Aidi’s morph, which turns out to be Brine Elemental. Lets everybody draw with Jace. Plays a morph.
Aidi: Land. EOT I cast Venser, Justin returns his own copy to his hand via his Riptide Lab. Venser resolves bouncing Justin’s morph, which turns out to be a Willbender.
Reza: Land.

Turn 6
Nik: Stripmines Aidi’s Seat of the Synod. Smacks me for 11 with Stomper, Ranger and Spider. I go down to 20.
Justin: Land. Tops again.
Aidi: Land. Attacks Clique into Justin’s naked Jace. Jace promptly dies. EOT Nik shoots Clique with his Spider and I Vamp Tutor for Hallowed Burial, going down to 18.
Reza: Land, cast Hallowed Burial. Justin counters it, but Aidi protects it with Rewind. All creatures go to the bottom of library. Nik is obviously pissed haha!

Turn 7
Nik: In a fit of rage, casts Tsunami, destroying all Islands. The 3 blue players cuss at Nik. Cast Quirion Ranger which is INSANE with Rofellos BTW.
Justin: Land. Tops again. Tries to cast Niv Mizzet, but a miscalculates his available coloured mana, so he takes it back.
Aidi: Land. With only 2 colourless lands in play at the moment, Aidi tops and casts Voltaic Key.
Reza: Demonic Tutors for Sol Ring and casts it. Plays Dimir Aqueduct, bouncing a land.

Turn 8
Nik: With a look of glee on his face, casts Crucible of Worlds, enabling his Strip Mine land-D engine. Plays the Mine from his graveyard and kills my Aqueduct. Hits me with the Dryad. I go to 17.
Justin: Land. Tops again. Notice a pattern here?
Aidi: Passes. Makes a fist at Nik.
Reza: Land.

Turn 9
Nik: Attempts to Strip Mine me again. Cast Opportunity with Strip Mine’s ability on the stack. Justin copies it with Reiterate. We both draw 4 cards each. Smacks me with the Dryad and I go to 16.
Justin: Land. Casts Mystical Tutor for Force of Will citing “8 cards in hand. Discarding is dumb.” I agree with him.
Aidi: Land. Finally, a blue source! Casts his own Crucible.
Reza: Land. Casts Sphinx Summoner for Solemn Simulacrum.

Turn 10
Nik: Strips my land again. Casts Predator, Flagship.
Justin: Goes in for the kill. Niv-Mizzet + Curiosity. Machineguns Aidi and I down, drawing almost 2/3rds his library. Fails to draw Reliquary Tower and has to discard.

Nik and Justin progress to the final Pod with Sham’s Ertai and Alif’s Altered Teeg (no prizes for guessing who painted it haha). I wasn’t sure who eventually won our pod or the Finals, but with the Mizzet out, I can only assume that Nik eventually died in the end Tongue

As this point, and after receiving our promo Kor Duelists, Aidi and I decide to start a Planechase 1v1 of our own with my Kresh deck vs. his Vendilion Clique. Suffice to say, it was a really really good match, going down to the wire with both players at single life digits! A notable play was Aidi casting Triskelion whilst we were at the Stronghold Furnace. The furnace doubles all damage dealt by any source with the Chaos ability dealing 1 damage (2 due to the Plane) to target creature or player. He could have pinged me for 6 and attacked with his Greaved up Stalking Stones to leave me at 1 life, but instead he attempted to equip the Trisk with Lightning Greaves instead. I received priority and happilly Krosan Gripped the Trisk Smiley I eventually shot Aidi down with a Chaos roll on the Furnace with my Shivan Gorge pinging him for 2 each turn.

Next week EDH night at EM returns to 1v1. Get your decks ready!

Bankslayer Angels

Today I said “screw it”. Will be plonking down some serious dosh for a playset of those hard to get Angels. But they will be SOOO worthit.

In other news, in a Winston draft, cracked 1 fetch (BW), 1 Chandra Ablaze, 1 DoJ. Whee!

Update 05.11.09

Baneslayers are now up to RM150 a pop, with Hari’s shop buying ‘em at RM120. Insane. Talk about being in-the-money. This article by Fuentes talks about the Bankslayer’s meteoric rise, no thanks to Kibler’s PT win with Rubin Zoo.

Update 27.11.09

Baneslayers hit USD60/EUR40 at Worlds in Rome. RM200 a pop now if you wanna buy ‘em but EM is still selling at RM130-40. The “in-the-money”ness feeling is just awesome. Kelly Reid of QS fame explains the meteoric rise of the Bankslayer.
