At 10.91km at the Challenger Deep, the Mariana Trench is the deepest part of the ocean. To put that into perspective, the site is 120 times larger than the Grand Canyon and a mile higher than Everest is tall. At the bottom, the pressure is 15,000 pounds per square inch; which is over a thousand times normal atmospheric pressure on the surface.
So who would ever want to go there? James Cameron, that’s who. The director became the first solo diver to visit Earth’s deepest point but resurfaced six hours earlier than expected in a 12-ton, lime-green sub called Deepsea Challenger.
As someone who grew up watching SeaQuest DSV and reading Fathom, I hereby award 1,000 cool points to Mr Cameron for spending his hard earned millions on exploring a place on earth very few have even dared to venture. We’ve not yet heard of the things he’s managed to see, sample or observe, but I presume this will come to a NatGeo documentary soon enough.
